The Sea Shepherd Crew Of The Steve Irwin

Nominated for the MTV Good Karma Award For Trying To Keep Whales On The Planet A Little Longer

In January this year, the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society hit headlines when Captain Paul Watson and his crew on the vessel Steve Irwin intercepted Japanese whalers "harvesting" cetaceans in the Australian Whale Sanctuary in the Antarctic. Crewmen Giles Lane and Benjamin Potts were taken hostage by Japanese crew on the Yushin Maru No. 2, and were eventually released following international pressure.

The incident was just one of many intercept efforts that the Sea Shepherd organization has conducted in recent times. Good Karma goes their way for their continued efforts to keep illegal whaling on the international agenda, and limiting the extent of “scientific whaling” occurring in the world’s oceans; particularly in internationally-recognised whale sanctuaries.
